Wheel Balance

If a wheel is not balanced, there is a problem of an unequal distribution of weight around the rim of the wheel and tire assembly. While rotating slowly, the tire may seem round and normal, but on the road centrifugal force acts on the heaviest part of the tire, making it wobble. It can become a reason of flat spots on the tire treads be dangerous to ball joints, bearings, steering, and shock absorbers. Technicians of auto repair service can measure a tire and wheel assembly, and after that add special wheel weights to restore balance. Hitting potholes and normal automobile wear-and-tear can cause unbalanced wheels. Rough tire wear can show you unbalanced wheels, so it's recommended to check your vehicle's tires regularly.

Out-of-balance tires can become a reason of car's vibration at between 50 and 70 mph speed. You can understand that a tire is out of balance when one section of the tire is heavier than the others. It is enough of one ounce of imbalance on a front tire to cause a vibration in the steering wheel at about 60 mph. The technician can help by mounting it on a balancing machine that spins the wheel to locate the heavier part. Then he will compensate for the heavy part by adding a lead weight on the opposite side. For some people it is a real surprise - they're shocked at how smooth their car drives after balancing all four wheels.

The majority of high quality tires will hold their balance pretty well and go out of balance very seldom. If you notice a vibration, the problem can be that one of the lead balancing weights fell off. If the vibration is mostly in the steering wheel, the problem is in a front wheel. If you feel the vibration mostly in the seat, the problem is more likely to be in the rear.
