Car Batteries
The source of energy for your vehicle's electrical system - is the battery..
Many people think that the only role of a battery is to start the vehicle. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Battery needed not only to start your car. Performance of your car depends on battery that is why it is very important to realize the three functions of a car battery.
- In order the engine to start the power should be provided to the starter and ignition.
- In case when electrical requirements exceed the power from the charging system the extra power is required. For example, if the engine is not in action, the battery takes a load of all accessories currently running such a radio, blades, and lights.
- Battery also acts as a voltage stabilizer in the electrical system. The battery smoothes out or reduces temporarily high voltages which occur in the electrical system of the vehicle. These overly high voltages can damage other solid state components in the electrical system if the protection of the battery would not exist.
Every time battery is used sulfation of the battery increases which is a part of the chemical reaction inside battery.
When a battery is sulfated, its voltage is dejected. The battery stops to contribute the necessary demands of the vehicle electrical system, and from an electrical view it "disappears".
Electronic and electrical elements then receive current directly from the alternator, and are subject to extreme momentary over-voltages. This results in premature failure of electronic components, halogen light bulbs, and electronic drive train components.
And if it happens, current is received directly from the alternator and electrical elements are subject to extreme momentary over-voltages. The result would be - untimely failure of electronic components, light bulbs and others.
Maintaining the Battery For Optimal Performance
Regular care for vehicle's battery is crucial. Before cold weather starts and at least once a month in hot weather you should
- Keep the correct electrolyte levels
- Tightening loose hold-down clamps and terminals on car battery
- Removing corrosion
- Check the alternator belt tension and wear
If needed you should know how to change car battery, it is an easy task and you will save money by doing it yourself. If the battery in your vehicle is close to be discharge the best solution is charging car battery using charger/jumper.
